Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, which belongs to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. These proteins are involved in growth and differentiation processes. BMPs were first identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo. BMP4 plays a crucial role in the initiation of endochondral bone formation in humans, and reduced expression has been linked to bone-related disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region has been reported, producing three transcript variants encoding the same protein.
