TREK-1 is a two-pore-domain background potassium channel expressed throughout the central nervous system. It is opened by polyunsaturated fatty acids and lysophospholipids, and regulated by various neurotransmitters. Alterations in TREK-1 function or regulation may influence mood. TREK-1 is activated by volatile anesthetics and is considered a potential target for therapeutic development in anesthesiology and neurology, including antidepressant research.
