Target Information
Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors characterized by a conserved pattern of eight cysteine residues and common VEGF receptors. VEGFs stimulate endothelial cells, promote angiogenesis, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.
VEGFB shares structural similarities with VEGF and PIGF and is frequently co-expressed with VEGF. There are two alternatively spliced isoforms: VEGFB 167 and VEGFB 186.
- VEGFB 167: Highly basic, heparin-binding, remains associated with cells or extracellular matrix.
- VEGFB 186: Readily secreted isoform.
VEGFB binds to the tyrosine kinase receptor VEGFR1 (flt1) and not to VEGFR2. It is widely expressed, most abundant in heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. Expression of VEGFB in human primary breast cancers has been associated with lymph node metastasis. The VEGFB gene is mapped to chromosome 11q13.
