Target Information
Interleukin-31 (IL-31) is a T-cell cytokine related to IL-6 type cytokines and is mainly produced by T helper type 2 cells. IL-31 signals through a receptor complex containing IL-31 receptor A and oncostatin M receptor, activating JAK/STAT and AKT pathways. IL-31 receptor expression is induced in activated monocytes and constitutive in epithelial cells. Overexpression of IL-31 in transgenic mice leads to pruritis, alopecia, and skin lesions, while in humans it is associated with atopic dermatitis, suggesting IL-31 as a potential target for antipruritic drug development.
