Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM) family.
All ICAM proteins are type I transmembrane glycoproteins containing 2–9 immunoglobulin-like C2-type domains and bind to the leukocyte adhesion LFA-1 protein.
ICAM-5 is expressed on telencephalic neurons and mediates both homophilic (neuron-neuron) and heterophilic (neuron-leukocyte) adhesion.
It may play a critical role in neuron–microglial interactions during normal development or neurodegenerative disease processes.
