Target Information
The serum amyloid A (SAA) family comprises a number of differentially expressed apolipoproteins, including acute-phase SAA1 and SAA2, with SAA1 being the major plasma component. Although the liver is the primary site of synthesis for both types, extrahepatic production has been reported. In vivo concentrations can increase up to 1000-fold during inflammation. Studies have highlighted its diagnostic and monitoring importance in various diseases. Pathological SAA levels may be detected even when CRP concentrations are normal; SAA rises earlier and more sharply than CRP. A broader understanding of SAA expression and function continues to emerge.
