Target Information

CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) found on various stem cell populations. It serves as a stem cell marker with reversible expression on human hematopoietic stem cells. CD34 may function as a surface receptor mediating endocytosis and regulating adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic and progenitor cells. It likely plays a role in stem cell attachment to bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells and may act as a scaffold for glycans enabling lectin interactions. The intracellular domain is phosphorylated by protein kinase C, suggesting involvement in signal transduction.
Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
