The EMK08 monoclonal antibody reacts with human CD133 (Prominin-1), a 120 kDa member of the pentaspan family of proteins, which includes Prominin-2. CD133 is found within plasma membrane protrusions such as epithelial microvilli and can exist in multiple alternatively spliced isoforms with tissue-dependent glycosylation.

Human CD133 was first identified as an epitope expressed on CD34+ hematopoietic progenitors. It serves as a marker for stem cells and cancer stem cells, including those in colon, brain, and prostate cancers.
The EMK08 antibody binds a distinct epitope from the TMP4 clone (Product # 12-1338).

Target Information

CD133 (AC133) is a 97 kDa glycoprotein with five transmembrane domains, appearing as a 120 kDa band on gels due to glycosylation. It is expressed on immature hematopoietic stem cells but not mature blood cells.
Also found on neural and embryonic stem cells, CD133 is expressed in cancers such as leukemia and brain tumors. Low-level expression occurs in kidney, pancreas, placenta, and fetal liver.
Mutations in CD133 are linked to retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease. Expression is controlled by multiple tissue-dependent promoters and transcript variants.
