Target Information
Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) functions as a cell surface kinesin I membrane receptor involved in axonal transport of beta-secretase and presenilin 1. It plays important roles in neurite growth, neuronal adhesion, and axonogenesis. APP is a 100–140 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein with multiple isoforms generated by alternative splicing. Proteolytic cleavage by beta- and gamma-secretases produces beta amyloid, the main component of senile plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Abnormal APP regulation is also associated with Down’s syndrome, early onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, and cerebral hemorrhage.
