Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPS27 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that may functionally associate with death-associated protein 3 (DAP3).
