SMC5는 SMC5-SMC6 복합체의 핵심 구성 요소로, DNA 이중가닥 절단 복구를 위한 상동 재조합에 관여합니다. 이 복합체는 SMC1-SMC3 cohesin 복합체를 손상 부위로 유도하여 자매 염색분체 재조합을 촉진할 수 있습니다. 또한 ALT(Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres) 세포주에서 텔로미어 유지에 필요하며, shelterin 복합체 구성요소의 sumoylation을 매개하여 ALT 관련 PML bodies(APBs)에서 shelterin 복합체 해체를 유도할 수 있습니다.
