Target Information
The SMN1 gene is part of a 500 kb inverted duplication on chromosome 5q13.
This region contains multiple genes and repetitive elements, making it prone to rearrangements and deletions.
Both telomeric and centromeric copies encode the same survival motor neuron (SMN) protein, which plays a catalytic role in the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), essential components of the spliceosome.
Mutations in the SMN1 gene are known to cause spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) types 1 and 2.
