Target Information
This gene encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), a cytosolic enzyme encoded by a housekeeping X-linked gene. Its main function is to produce NADPH, an essential electron donor for defense against oxidative stress and for reductive biosynthetic reactions.
G6PD is genetically diverse, with many variants caused by missense mutations that lead to varying enzyme activity and clinical symptoms. G6PD deficiency may result in neonatal jaundice, acute hemolysis, or chronic non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms are known.
