Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. MRPL55 encodes a 39S subunit protein, and multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms have been identified.
