Target Information
Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide expressed in C cells of the normal and hyperplastic thyroid.
Staining for calcitonin is used to identify C cell proliferative abnormalities ranging from hyperplasia to invasive tumors.
In medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, calcitonin staining shows a fine granular cytoplasmic pattern, and amyloid deposits within the tumor may also display calcitonin activity.
