Product Specific Information

  • Antibody is stable for 24 months.
  • Positive Control: Human thyroid
  • Cellular Localization: Cytoplasm, Secreted
  • Specificity Comments:
Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid polypeptide hormone that preserves skeletal integrity and reduces blood calcium levels by decreasing osteoclast activity in bones, calcium and phosphate reabsorption by kidney tubules, and calcium absorption by the intestines.
Its secretion from the thyroid is regulated in part by estrogen, which increases Calcitonin mRNA levels.
The Calcitonin gene (CALCA) undergoes tissue-specific RNA alternative splicing, producing different mRNA transcripts. One transcript encodes procalcitonin and processed active polypeptides (Calcitonin and katacalcin).
An alternative transcript encodes the precursor for the neuropeptide Calcitonin gene-related peptide 1 (CGRP1). Mature CGRP1 and CGRP2 share high sequence identity, differing by only 1–3 residues depending on species.

Target Information

Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide found in C cells of normal and hyperplastic thyroid tissue.
Staining for Calcitonin assists in identifying C cell proliferative abnormalities, from hyperplasia to invasive tumors.
In medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, Calcitonin staining produces a fine granular cytoplasmic pattern. Amyloid deposits within tumors may also show varying Calcitonin activity.
