Target Information
The vesicle-associated membrane proteins (VAMPs), also known as synaptobrevins, are calcium-binding proteins specific to eukaryotic cells. VAMPs, together with SNAP-25 and syntaxin, form the core SNARE complex that interacts with NSF and alpha-SNAP to regulate vesicle fusion with the plasma membrane.
Clostridium tetani neurotoxin specifically cleaves VAMP. In Alzheimer’s disease, VAMP levels are significantly reduced. VAMP2 is also known as a resident protein of the insulin-sensitive GLUT4 compartment and is required for GLUT4 vesicle incorporation into the cell surface in response to insulin.
