Target Information
Azurocidin, also known as heparin-binding protein (HBP), is an inactive homolog of serine proteinases found in granulocytes. Initially recognized for its activity against gram-negative bacteria, it is now known to act against gram-positive bacteria and Candida albicans.
Azurocidin is a member of the polymorphonuclear leukocyte-derived antimicrobial protein family, including defensins, LL-37, and lysozyme. It plays a role in immune activation and modulation, chemotaxis, cytokine release, and phagocytosis, contributing to bacterial clearance.
It interacts with endothelial and extravascular cells through beta 2-integrins, and elevated plasma levels may indicate risk of sepsis.
