Target Information
MEF2C is a transcription activator that binds specifically to the MEF2 element in regulatory regions of many muscle-specific genes. It controls cardiac morphogenesis and myogenesis and is involved in vascular development. MEF2C plays an essential role in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory by regulating excitatory synapses and synaptic transmission. It is crucial for normal neuronal development, cortical electrical activity, and proper development of megakaryocytes, platelets, and B lymphopoiesis. MEF2C is required for B-cell survival and proliferation in response to BCR stimulation, efficient IgG1 antibody responses, and germinal center formation. Isoforms 3 and 4, lacking the repressor domain, are more active than isoforms 1 and 2.
