Target Information
ALKBH5 (RNA demethylase ALKBH5) is a dioxygenase that demethylates RNA by oxidative demethylation. Specifically, it removes N(6)-methyladenosine (m6A) modifications from RNA, which is the most prevalent internal modification in eukaryotic mRNA.
Demethylation of m6A mRNA affects mRNA processing and export. ALKBH5 can also demethylate N(6)-methyladenosine in single-stranded DNA (in vitro).
It requires molecular oxygen, alpha-ketoglutarate, and iron for its enzymatic activity.
