Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine that belongs to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) ligand family. It is abundantly expressed in endothelial cells but not in B or T cells. Expression is inducible by TNF and IL-1 alpha. This cytokine acts as a ligand for receptors TNFRSF25 and TNFRSF21/DR6, can activate NF-kappaB and MAP kinases, and functions as an autocrine factor inducing apoptosis in endothelial cells. It also inhibits endothelial cell proliferation, functioning as an angiogenesis inhibitor. An additional isoform from an alternatively spliced transcript variant has been reported, though its sequence has not been determined.
