Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)는 분비형 신호 분자로, 이소성 골 형성을 유도할 수 있습니다. 다수의 BMP는 transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily에 속합니다. BMPs는 탈무기질화된 골 추출물이 체외에서 골 형성을 유도하는 능력으로 처음 확인되었습니다.
BMP7은 배아 발생 초기 발현 양상에 근거하여 초기 발달에 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 제안되며, BMP5 및 BMP6와의 유사성으로 인해 골 유도 활성이 있을 것으로 추정됩니다.
