Target Information
Glutathione plays a crucial role in protecting cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals, detoxifying xenobiotics, and facilitating membrane transport. The GSS gene encodes a protein functioning as a homodimer that catalyzes the ATP-dependent conversion of gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteine to glutathione, the second step in glutathione biosynthesis. Defects in this gene can result in glutathione synthetase deficiency.
