Target Information
CD44 cell surface antigen is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and some epithelial cells of the intestine and breast.
Several isoforms exist, including the predominant CD44H isoform found in many normal tissues. CD44 acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and mediates cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration.
It participates in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. CD44 expression may increase in certain carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential.
It is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express CD44 at high levels, and peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 under stimulation.
Alternative splicing of CD44 transcripts generates multiple isoforms, contributing to structural and functional diversity.
Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may be related to tumor metastasis formation.
