Target Information
WW domain-containing proteins are found in all eukaryotes and play important roles in regulating cellular functions such as protein degradation, transcription, and RNA splicing.
The WWOX gene encodes a protein containing two WW domains and a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase domain (SRD).
It is highly expressed in hormonally regulated tissues (testis, ovary, prostate) and is implicated in steroid metabolism.
The protein shares over 90% identity with the mouse homolog, which mediates TNF-α-induced apoptosis, suggesting a similar role in human apoptosis.
Evidence also indicates that WWOX functions as a tumor suppressor.
Alternative splicing generates transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
