Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. They dissociate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, releasing energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). UCPs facilitate anion transfer across the mitochondrial membranes and reduce the mitochondrial membrane potential. Different UCPs show tissue-specific expression, with UCP1 expressed primarily in brown adipose tissue, which functions in heat production.
