Target Information
This protein belongs to the lipocalin family and serves as the specific carrier for retinol in the blood. It transports retinol from liver stores to peripheral tissues. In plasma, the RBP-retinol complex interacts with transthyretin, preventing its loss through kidney filtration. Vitamin A deficiency can block secretion of this binding protein post-translationally, leading to defective retinol delivery to epidermal cells.
