Target Information
CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen, CD66e) is synthesized during fetal development in the gut and re-expressed in intestinal carcinomas and other tumors. It belongs to the immunoglobulin supergene family, consisting of one N domain and six constant-like A and B domains.
Antibodies to CEA aid in identifying the origin of metastatic adenocarcinomas and distinguishing pulmonary adenocarcinomas (CEA+) from pleural mesotheliomas (rarely or weakly CEA+).
CEA functions as a cell adhesion molecule found on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia, mediating homophilic and heterophilic interactions. It plays roles in tissue differentiation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and immune modulation. Multiple transcript variants exist, though not all are fully defined.
