Target Information
CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen, CD66e) is synthesized during fetal gut development and re-expressed in intestinal carcinomas and other tumors.
It belongs to the immunoglobulin supergene family, consisting of a single N domain and six immunoglobulin constant-like domains (A1–A3, B1–B3).
Antibodies to CEA help identify the origin of metastatic adenocarcinomas and distinguish pulmonary adenocarcinomas (CEA+) from pleural mesotheliomas (rarely CEA+).
CEA functions as a cell adhesion molecule detected on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia, involved in tissue structure, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and immune modulation.
Multiple transcript variants exist, though not all are fully characterized.
