Target Information
Nitric oxide (NO) is an inorganic, gaseous free radical that acts as a signaling molecule between cells. It plays roles in vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity. NO production is mediated by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) family, which catalyzes the oxidation of L-arginine to produce L-citrulline and NO.
There are three NOS isoforms:
- nNOS (type I) – neuronal NOS
- iNOS (type II) – inducible NOS
- eNOS (type III) – endothelial NOS
All NOS isoforms contain binding domains for calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN.
