Target Information
Potassium channels are present in most mammalian cells, participating in various physiological responses.
The protein encoded by KCNJ1 is an integral membrane protein and inward-rectifier type potassium channel, activated by internal ATP, and plays a key role in potassium homeostasis.
It allows potassium to flow preferentially into cells rather than out.
Mutations in this gene are linked to antenatal Bartter syndrome, characterized by salt wasting, hypokalemic alkalosis, hypercalciuria, and low blood pressure.
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
