Target Information
IL-6 encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B cell maturation. The protein acts as an endogenous pyrogen, inducing fever in autoimmune and infectious conditions. It is mainly expressed at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, secreted into serum, and triggers transcriptional inflammatory responses via the interleukin 6 receptor alpha.
IL-6 is associated with inflammation-related diseases such as diabetes mellitus susceptibility, systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Kaposi sarcoma, and rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated levels are observed in viral infections, including COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).
