This gene belongs to the SPANX family of cancer/testis-associated genes located in a cluster on chromosome X. SPANX genes encode testis-specific proteins that localize to various subcellular compartments.
The encoded protein targets the nucleus, associating with nuclear vacuoles and the redundant nuclear envelope, serving as a biochemical marker for studying unique structures in spermatozoa and spermatogenesis.
