Target Information

The HYAL3 gene encodes a member of the hyaluronidase family. Hyaluronidases are endoglycosidase enzymes that degrade hyaluronan, a major glycosaminoglycan of the extracellular matrix. The regulated turnover of hyaluronan is critical for biological processes such as cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. The encoded protein may also play an important role in sperm function. HYAL3 is located in chromosome region 3p21.3, which is associated with tumor suppression. Expression of specific transcript variants may indicate tumor status. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been observed, and some may lack hyaluronidase activity. This gene overlaps with and shares part of its first exon with N-acetyltransferase 6 (GCN5-related).
