Target Information
Immunity-related GTPases (IRG, also known as p47 GTPases) are a family of GTPase proteins found in vertebrates that play critical roles in mediating innate resistance to intracellular pathogens.
IRG genes are present in mammals and lower species including mice, rats, zebrafish, and humans.
Most mouse genes contain interferon-stimulated response elements mediating transcriptional activation by IFNs.
In humans, two IRG genes have been identified: IRGC and IRGM.
- Human IRGC encodes a full-length IRG protein constitutively expressed in testis.
- Human IRGM encodes a truncated protein expressed in cultured cells, including macrophage lines.
As these human genes are not IFN-controlled, the IRG-mediated host resistance mechanism found in mice appears absent in humans.
