Target Information
Sox genes comprise a family of genes related to the mammalian sex-determining gene SRY. These genes contain sequences encoding the HMG-box domain, responsible for sequence-specific DNA-binding activity. Sox genes encode transcriptional regulators involved in cell fate decisions and developmental control processes.
There are at least 40 Sox loci identified, with 30 Sox genes currently known. These genes are conserved across evolution and play essential roles in animal development. Some members are associated with human diseases, including sex reversal.
