Target Information

Apoptosis is related to many diseases and developmental processes. Caspase-9 plays a central role in cell death induced by various apoptosis activators. Cytochrome c, after release from mitochondria, binds to Apaf-1 to form an apoptosome that activates procaspase-9. Activated caspase-9 subsequently activates effector caspases (caspase-3, -6, and -7), leading to proteolytic cleavage of key proteins in apoptosis.
Putative HLA-DR-associated proteins (PHAPs) have been identified as important regulators of mitochondrial apoptosis. PHAP facilitates apoptosome-mediated caspase-9 activation and stimulates the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. It also opposes Ras- and Myc-mediated cell transformation.
