Target Information

Azurocidin, also called heparin-binding protein (HBP), is an inactive homolog of serine proteinases residing in granulocytes. Initially, it was thought to have activity only against gram-negative bacteria, but later it was found to act against gram-positive bacteria and C. albicans.
Azurocidin is a member of the polymorphonuclear leukocyte-derived antimicrobial protein family, including defensins, LL-37, and lysozyme. It plays a role in activation and modulation of the immune response and may act as an alarm signal to the immune system. The cationic domain is essential for its antimicrobial activity.
It is stored in azurophil and secretory granules and released early during extravasation. Azurocidin is involved in chemotaxis and activation of monocytes, cytokine release, and phagocytosis, contributing to efficient bacterial clearance.
High plasma levels of azurocidin may serve as a marker for patients at risk of developing sepsis.
