Target Information

This gene encodes coagulation factor VIII, which participates in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. Factor VIII acts as a cofactor for factor IXa, converting factor X to the activated form Xa in the presence of Ca²⁺ and phospholipids.

• Produces two alternatively spliced transcripts:
  • Transcript variant 1: Encodes isoform a, a large glycoprotein circulating in plasma, associated with von Willebrand factor.
  • Transcript variant 2: Encodes isoform b, a smaller protein containing the phospholipid-binding domain essential for coagulant activity.

Defects in this gene cause hemophilia A, an X-linked recessive coagulation disorder.
