Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, contrasting with prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein that is more than twice the size of its E. coli counterpart, with two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
