Target Information
Dicer is a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) endoribonuclease that plays a central role in short dsRNA-mediated post-transcriptional gene silencing. It cleaves long dsRNAs and short hairpin pre-microRNAs (miRNAs) into fragments of 21–23 nucleotides with 3′ overhangs, producing short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and mature microRNAs.
SiRNAs and miRNAs guide the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to complementary RNAs to degrade them or inhibit translation.
RNA interference mediated by siRNAs helps eliminate transcripts from mobile and repetitive DNA elements and degrades exogenous viral RNA. The miRNA pathway specifically regulates target gene expression.
