Target Information
Dicer is a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) endoribonuclease that plays a central role in short dsRNA-mediated post-transcriptional gene silencing. It cleaves long dsRNAs and short hairpin pre-microRNAs (miRNA) into fragments of 21–23 nucleotides with 3′ overhangs of two nucleotides, producing short interfering RNAs (siRNA) and mature microRNAs.
These siRNAs and miRNAs guide the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to complementary RNAs to degrade them or inhibit translation.
Gene silencing mediated by siRNAs (RNA interference) controls elimination of transcripts from mobile and repetitive DNA elements and degradation of exogenous viral RNA.
The miRNA pathway specifically regulates expression of target genes.
