Target Information

CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of 24 kDa.
It is produced by the liver and its plasma levels increase dramatically during inflammatory processes.
CRP initiates the classical complement cascade, binds nuclear components (chromatin, histones, etc.), and plays an important role in innate immunity.
It acts as an opsonin, activates monocytes/macrophages, and may serve as a scavenger during cell necrosis.
Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
