IL-6은 염증 및 B세포 성숙에 관여하는 사이토카인을 암호화하는 유전자입니다. 이 단백질은 내인성 발열 물질로, 자가면역 질환 또는 감염 시 발열을 유도할 수 있습니다. 주로 급성 및 만성 염증 부위에서 발현되며, 혈청으로 분비되어 IL-6 수용체를 통해 전사적 염증 반응을 유도합니다.
IL-6 기능 이상은 당뇨병, 전신성 소아 류머티즘 관절염 등 다양한 염증 관련 질환과 연관되어 있으며, SARS-CoV-2 감염(COVID-19)에서도 상승된 IL-6 수치가 보고되었습니다.
관련 질환으로는 Kaposi Sarcoma, Rheumatoid Arthritis (Systemic Juvenile) 등이 있습니다.
