Glutamine synthetase는 glutamine synthetase family에 속하며, 동물에서 암모니아의 흡수는 glutamate dehydrogenase와 glutamine synthetase의 작용을 통해 일어납니다. Glutamate는 포유류 질소 흐름의 중심적 역할을 하며, 질소 공여자 및 수용체로 작용합니다. 또한 신경전달물질 glutamate의 대사 조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다. GS의 촉매 활성과 합성은 세포 대사에서 매우 중요하며, adenylylation에 의해 조절됩니다. Alzheimer’s disease로 영향을 받은 뇌의 대뇌피질에서 GS 활성은 감소하며, 포도당 결핍 상태에서도 감소합니다.
