Target Information
Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) encodes a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid hormone synthesis. It catalyzes iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and the coupling of iodotyrosines to produce thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Mutations in TPO can result in thyroid hormone production disorders such as congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defect IIA. Multiple transcript variants exist, though some remain incompletely characterized. Associated diseases include Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis 2A and Congenital Hypothyroidism.
