- Specificity: Mucolipin 1, isoforms 1 and 2.
Target Information
Defects in Mucolipin-1 cause mucolipidosis type IV (MLIV), also known as sialolipidosis.
MLIV is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder characterized by:
- Severe psychomotor retardation
- Ophthalmologic abnormalities (corneal opacity, retinal degeneration, strabismus)
- Storage bodies of lipids and water-soluble substances visible by electron microscopy
- Most patients unable to speak or walk independently, developmental level of 1–2 years
- Constitutive achlorhydria with secondary elevation of serum gastrin levels
