Target Information

The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also expressed in bone marrow and the immune system. These mRNAs originate from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP) containing three additional exons upstream of the classic MBP exons.
Alternative splicing produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins:

1. Golli-MBP transcripts – contain unique Golli exons spliced to MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli and MBP sequences.
2. Classic MBP transcripts – contain only MBP exons, producing well-characterized myelin basic proteins.

This conserved gene structure suggests an integral relationship between Golli and MBP transcription units, important for gene function and regulation.
