Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the S100 family of proteins, characterized by two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. S100 proteins are localized in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of various cell types and play roles in regulating cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. The S100 gene family includes at least 13 members clustered on chromosome 1q21. This protein may act as an inhibitor of casein kinase and function as a cytokine. Altered expression of this protein has been associated with cystic fibrosis.
