Target Information

Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, responsible for more than 30,000 deaths per year in the USA. In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified from patients in Mexico and the United States. The virus spread globally, and on June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic.

Influenza A virus has sixteen possible Hemagglutinin (HA) surface proteins and nine possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. HA facilitates viral attachment, while NA is involved in viral release. Both proteins elicit immune responses that can prevent infection or reduce viral replication.

The genetic composition of the 2009 swine-origin H1N1 virus is unique, combining a triple assortment of human, swine, and avian influenza genes with two new pig H3N2 virus genes from Eurasia. These distinct antigenic properties suggest limited human immunity against the new strain, although older age groups may have partial protection.
